STEWARD & ASSOCIATES INC.

Executive Summary

Too often it has been left to television and the movies to provide images of the African-American community.  Few opportunities exist to experience positive images of African-Americans outside those media wherein the images portrayed are often in a negative context. Steward & Associates, a community based organization, developed the lecture/workshop/theatre series in 1986.  Our mission is to present prominent and credible African-Americans to the greater Indianapolis community and surrounding cities and Midwest states.  This forum is designed to inspire, inform and foster meaningful dialogue and cultural exchange.  An educational experience is afforded to young people, families, indigent and the adult learner who normally would not receive the opportunity to attend such events.  Steward & Associates showcases lecturers of national and local prominence. During the last season, Steward & Associates presented entrepreneur extraordinaire Dr. Randal Pinkett, Judge Glenda Hatchett, Angela Burt-Murray and Congressman Andre Carson addressing women in business and faith in politics. Steward & Associates produces the educational series.  The series provides an opportunity for people to be exposed to successful African-American personalities.  All public events for the 2010/2011 season are scheduled at the Madame Walker Theatre Center; other venues and all school lectures will be hosted by the Indianapolis Public Schools, Township Schools, and select churches.  The attendance for each public event is targeted for one thousand people per event.  Our audience is made up of adults, middle-class professionals, students, and the adult learner from all socio-economic, racial and ethnic backgrounds. Programs and Services Steward & Associates presents an educational lecture/workshop/theatrical series for the benefit of people in Indianapolis, surrounding cities and Midwest states.  The series provides an opportunity for adult learners, youth and the public to be exposed to African-Americans who are viewed as positive role models. Program Goals

  1. To enhance the potential of young people and the adult learner by providing African-American role models;
  2. To provide individuals first hand contact with role models who are successful in their respective careers.  In this process we can begin to pave a way for individuals to see the possibilities of attaining their personal goals; and
  3. To provide educational programs for the adult learner, youth and the public.
Program Objectives
  1. To provide 25% of the series tickets free or substantially discounted for students, adult learners and economically disadvantaged persons;
  2. To provide an outreach program for four or more area schools.  Approximately five thousand students will attend these activities.  This experience enhances the perception of real success with a clearer reality to the possibilities of African-American achievement.  The primary focus is to engage those who otherwise would not experience the benefit of learning from and talking with achievers;
  3. To video/audio tape each event for use by schools and churches as an education tool;
  4. To provide an annual series of three or more lectures.
Essay Contest Steward & Associates conducts the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “Dream” Essay Contest.  The contest is available for students in grades K-12.  Each student is required to center the essay on, “How Does My Life Keep the Dream Alive.”  The essay is judged on content and how well the essay addresses the question. Three winners are selected from each grade category with first place winners receiving a $300 Savings Bond, second place winners receiving $200 Savings Bond and the third place winners receiving $100 Savings Bonds.  All finalists’ essays are displayed at the Lecture Series in February.  Winners are announced at this event and they are required to give excerpts from their essays. Distance Learning Program In 1996 Steward & Associates collaborated on its first Distance Learning Program.  Ameritech sponsored the appearance of Terry McMillan, author and famed creator of “Waiting to Exhale”, and “How Stella Got Her Groove Back”.  The host Indianapolis School was Northwest High School.  The schools impacted by distance learning were Crawfordsville High School and Muncie High School.  Our goal in 2009/2010 is to present some guest lecturers via distance learning to schools that have the distance learning technology. Through the Distance Learning Program guest lecturers can inspire and instruct children in school districts beyond the Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS).  In the Distance Learning Program we allow teachers to broaden their curriculum and reach students in surrounding communities who might not otherwise be able to be exposed to our guest lecturers. In the Distance Learning Program, Steward & Associates is able to reach students, not only in Indianapolis, but in other cities and towns throughout the state.  This new and innovative technology enhances cross cultural sharing and dialogue between urban and rural area students.  This program enhances educational opportunities and promotes cultural diversity in our schools and communities.  This non-traditional approach could have a far reaching impact in how we think about the educational process. Distance Learning Objectives
  1. To compel, challenge and excite students to continue their educational learning and broaden their quest for knowledge.
  2. To stimulate the student’s interest in academic and general reading.
  3. To broaden the student’s horizon and expose them to new opportunities.
  4. To empower students with the personal confidence and reassurance that they can succeed.
  5. To work with school administrators and teachers to enhance their curriculum by including the history of African-Americans.  Teachers will be encouraged to continue to stimulate the student’s interest once they have been exposed to this program.
  6. To promote dialogue and information exchange with people from cross cultural backgrounds and
  7. To generate greater awareness of the value of getting an education.
By exposing students to successful individuals it has been our experience that students are inspired to reach for higher levels of excellence, “to be the best they can be”.  Our guest lecturers represent positive African American role models.  They are recognized as individuals who are successful in their chosen careers.  Our guest lecturers will be able to stress to the students the advantages of staying in school and the reason they should always strive to do their best.  Students that experience such interactions can visualize the possibilities of achieving their personal goals.  This program illustrates the power and impact technology has in advancing the educational process. Program Evaluation Steward & Associates conducts as part of its regular activities, an evaluation of each program to determine impact and in the interest of our own accountability.  The information gathered will be useful for future program management and for stakeholders to see the benefit of their support.  This process will help determine the success of the program and assist in making changes necessary for improvements in marketing and programs. An evaluation form will be given to each guest at each event.  The form includes questions about demographics and the impact of the event.  We will request feedback from the teachers on the distance learning and benefits of the program.  The teachers will be asked to have students complete an evaluation of the program. Collaborations Steward & Associates has developed a close alliance with local churches, colleges and universities and youth service providers to offer free and/or discounted tickets to youth for each event. Youth and adult learners are recruited to participate in the program through African-American churches, Jewish synagogues, Indianapolis public and private schools, evening schools, GED and magnet programs, and community based organizations.  Those organizations include:  Madame Walker Urban Life Center – Youth in Arts Program, Indiana Black Expo, Jewish Community Center and the Indiana Girls and Boys Schools.  Transportation is partially provided by churches and youth organizations.
